Betting Words Defined
Gambling has its own vocabulary, and a single unfamiliar word can make an otherwise clear article hard to follow. This page collects the terms that come up most often in our entries, each explained in a sentence or two. It is a reference, not a lesson, so feel free to jump to the word you need.
Slot terms
- Reel
- One vertical column of symbols on a slot screen. Most online slots show five, though layouts vary widely.
- Payline
- A path across the reels on which matching symbols form a win. Some games replace fixed lines with "ways to win" that count matching symbols on adjacent reels.
- Paytable
- The screen that lists what each symbol combination pays and explains the features. It is the best place to learn a game.
- Wild
- A symbol that stands in for others to help complete a win.
- Scatter
- A symbol that usually pays or triggers a feature wherever it lands, regardless of lines.
- Multiplier
- A number that scales a win after it has landed. Explained in full in our multiplier entry.
- Return to player (RTP)
- A long-run figure published by the developer describing how much of all money staked a game pays back over a very large number of spins. It says nothing reliable about one session.
- Volatility
- How unevenly a game spreads its wins. Higher volatility means longer dry spells and larger, rarer prizes.
- Hit frequency
- The share of spins that return any win at all, including wins smaller than the stake.
- Random number generator (RNG)
- The software that decides each outcome independently of earlier spins.
Sports-betting terms
- Market
- A question you can bet on, such as the match result or the exact final score.
- Odds
- The price of a selection, showing what a winning bet returns. Odds always include a margin for the bookmaker.
- Margin
- The share built into a set of prices that favours the operator. Also called the overround or vig.
- Settlement
- How and when a bet is graded as won, lost or void under the operator's rules.
- Regular time
- In football, ninety minutes plus stoppage time. Most markets ignore extra time and penalties.
- Void
- A bet cancelled with the stake returned, often after a postponed or abandoned event.
- Correct score
- A market on the exact final score. See our correct score entry.
Bankroll and safer-play terms
- Bankroll
- The money set aside purely for gambling, kept apart from everyday funds.
- Stake
- The amount placed on a single spin or bet.
- Loss limit
- A cap on net losses over a set period, after which play stops.
- Deposit limit
- A cap on how much money can be moved into an account over a period.
- Chasing losses
- Betting more, or for longer, to try to recover money already lost.
- Self-exclusion
- A scheme or account setting that shuts you out of gambling for a period you pick.
